Pauline McMahan

Lula Pauline Herod McMahan of Powder Springs, GA passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2017. She was 95. Born in Adairsville, GA (next to Barnsley Gardens) on July 28, 1922 to Dewey Layton Herod and Velma Christine Herod. She attended O’Keefe High School in Atlanta, GA located at Techwood Dr. and 6th St. (it is now part of the GA Tech Campus). She married Wiley Kelly “W.K./Mac” McMahan in 1940. She attended beauty school on Auburn Ave. in Atlanta. After graduating from beauty school she owned her own beauty shop where she worked for many years. Later, she also worked at Sears & Roebuck (now Ponce City Market) as an IBM key punch operator.

Pauline lived in Tampa for 27 years. She thoroughly enjoyed the beach and all the sea life that went along with it. While living there she enjoyed entertaining family and friends coming to stay. She had been on a bowling team in Tampa and competed with her team. They enjoyed traveling together and having fun practicing. She traveled to many countries throughout her life as well as most of the U.S. states. She loved to travel whether by train, car or plane.

Pauline was an avid bird feeder and observer, gardener, crossword puzzle solver, follower of healthy nutrition and herbs, and enjoyed various forms of exercise. She had been a volunteer at Zoo Atlanta in the petting zoo and their botany program. She also volunteered at Good Mews cat shelter. She was always willing to help a stray animal in need. Her pets were her family and she was quite protective of them as such.

Pauline was incredibly kind, patient, loving, loyal, and sincere. She would also stand her ground and let her opinion be heard. She loved life and wanted to live, do, experience, have fun, and be around her family. She will forever be missed and in our hearts.

Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley Kelly “W.K./Mac” McMahan; sister, Winnie Herod Copeland and brother, Ronald Dewey “Buddy” Herod (Sylvia). She is survived by her daughter, Anita “Karen” McMahan and granddaughter, Tara “Scarlett” McLain of Cumming, GA and a son, Wiley “Keith” McMahan of Powder Springs, GA; 1 brother, Melvin “Gus” Herod (Kay) of Key Largo, FL; sisters, Margie Herod Fuller of Flowery Branch, GA, Carol Herod Hawkins of Decatur, GA, and Norma Herod Lackey of Calhoun, GA; a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
