Michael Hayes Sr.

Michael Allen Hayes, Sr. of Canton, Georgia, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Saturday, July 15, 2017, with his beloved wife and children at his side.

Michael was born in Gastonia, NC, on May 13, 1948, and was the son of James H. Hayes, Sr. and Myrtle (Teague) Hayes. He was raised in Bowling Green, SC and Clover, SC.

He was a graduate of Clover, SC High School and attended Clemson University. Michael also served in the U.S. Army.

Michael had a long and successful career at CH2M HILL, a global engineering firm, where he also met the love of his life, his wife of 22 years, Ann Costakis Hayes. He started as a Structural Technician, advancing to Global Technology Leader for Design Automation before retiring in 2009. He had a passion for new technology, and his career took him to many locations where he mentored and developed talented and innovative teams. A highlight of his career was his assignment on the London Olympics 2012 Programme. He was also a charter member of the American Design Drafting Association.

He was a devout Orthodox Christian and a member of Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Marietta, GA, and Sts. Raphael, Nicholas & Irene Greek Orthodox Church in Cumming, GA.

Michael was truly a Renaissance Man. He was a talented musician, singer, artist, and writer. He delighted in sharing his talents with friends and family, whether singing and entertaining at his birthday celebrations, writing and illustrating short stories starring his grandchildren, or composing poems for birthday cards. Michael was also renowned for the creative homilies with which he started every holiday celebration. He was the family historian and loved to immerse himself in discovering new information about the family history.

Members of the family include his loving wife Ann Costakis Hayes, daughter Cynthia Hayes Southard and son-in-law Rodney Southard of Conyers, GA, and son Michael Allen Hayes, Jr. and daughter-in-law Robin Hayes of Cumming, GA.  His family also includes eight grandchildren, Hannah Smith, Haley Burns, Karah Southard, Peyton Moore, Hollis Hayes, Griffin Hayes, Hadleigh Hayes, and Kendra Fulford, and three great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his brother James H. Hayes, Jr. and sister-in-law Kathy Hayes, brother Stephen Hayes, sister Julie Hayes, brother-in-law Nicholas Costakis, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his “boy”, Niko.

Services:

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 19, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Canton Funeral Home and Cemetery at Macedonia Memorial Park, 10655 East Cherokee Drive in Canton, GA. The Trisagion Prayers will be offered at 7:00 pm. The funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:30 am at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 3431 Trickum Road NE, in Marietta, GA.Burial will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery in Manchester, NH with military honors on Tuesday, July 25th.
