Marvin Smith Herrington, age 96, of Canton, GA passed away on August 2, 2026, at home with family.
He was born on March 9, 1930, in Crisp County, Georgia, the son of the late Bob and Ethel (Shrouder) Herrington. He married Claudia Cobb, his high school sweetheart, and they celebrated over 60 years of marriage. Marvin graduated from East Crisp High School in Crisp County, Georgia and later graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.S. in Agricultural Education. After college, he taught Agriculture for over 15 years in Webster and Mitchell County, Georgia. Later, he served as Camp Director at the State FFA/FHA Camp on Lake Jackson near Covington, Georgia for nearly 10 years. After that, he went to Auburn University to earn his M.Ed. in School Administration. He then worked as a Public School Administrator in Cherokee County at Etowah High School and Dean Rusk Middle School until he retired in 1989. He was also a Mason for over 50 years.
Marvin and Claudia loved gardening and farming at their homes in Union Hill and later Macedonia. They also loved travelling with all of their children and made several trips to Hawaii and Florida as well as exploring other places across the United States.
Marvin is survived by his children, Frank (Linda) Herrington, Wanda Runyan, and Donna Dye; his grandchildren, Christa, Scott, Justin, Joey, Rose, Greg, and Chris; and many great- and great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Claudia and many other beloved members of his family.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday, August 6, from 11:00 to 1:00 at Canton Funeral Home at Canton Funeral Home and Macedonia Memorial Park with service and burial following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Georgia FFA (Future Farmers of America) Foundation or to Antioch Christian Church in Canton, GA.
