Martha Lee “Margie” Maphet
October 1, 1930 – April 17, 2026
Martha Lee Maphet, lovingly known as Margie, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2026, at the age of 95 at The Landings in Canton, Georgia. She was born in Campbell County Kentucky on October 1, 1930. At the age of 10, Margie accepted Jesus as her Savior at a revival meeting, alongside her brother—a decision that anchored her faith for the rest of her life.
She graduated from Simon Kenton High School and shortly thereafter met and married Bill Maphet. After welcoming three sons, they relocated to Stone Mountain, Georgia, where they built their life and raised their family. As a homemaker, Margie’s greatest joy was raising her sons and caring for grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and neighborhood children who were always welcome in her home.
She was especially proud of her sons and the men they became. She admired their service in both the military and law enforcement, as well as their professional accomplishments. Margie was dedicated to serving the needs of her community and was a faithful member of Decatur Heights Church, where she served on multiple committees and as treasurer into her early eighties.
In her later years, she moved to Canton, Georgia, where she became a member of Calvary Baptist Church and lived with her son and daughter-in-law. There, she was lovingly cared for, pampered, and honored by a devoted circle of family and friends.
Margie found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved bright-colored flowers, challenging jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, and playing games like Scrabble, where she always aimed for the triple score and rarely missed it. She was especially known for cheating at cards, though even if caught, she never confessed. She enjoyed going “junking” with her sisters-in-law and never left a store empty-handed. She could always spot a beautiful piece of crystal and was often thinking of others when choosing something special to bring home.
Most of all, Margie loved her family and helping others. Her table was always open and welcoming, and many of her sons’ military and law enforcement friends found a seat there. Her warmth, generosity, and servant’s heart brought calm and comfort to all who were blessed to enter her home.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, William D. Maphet, Sr. “Bill”; her son, William Duncan Maphet, Jr. “Billy”; her mother, Cynthia Veatch Lee; her father, Louis P. Lee, Sr.; her brothers, Louis “Junior” Lee and Joseph Ben “Benny” Lee; her sister, Alice Lee; and her sister-in-law, Betty Jo Belew Lee.
Margie is survived by her loving sons and daughters-in-law, Bryan and Tracie Maphet, and Mark and Rahnee Maphet; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law and dear friend of 85 years, Ursella Lee; many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved her.
Every person who crossed Margie’s path shared the same opinion—she was the sweetest soul, always wearing a smile and greeting everyone with warmth and kindness. Most recently, visitors to her memory care room were greeted by a sign on her door that read, “Sweet as pie.” That pretty much says it all.
