John Harold White, Jr. passed away peacefully May 1st, at 4:00 pm while in hospice in
Marietta, Georgia. He resided in Soleil in Canton, Georgia. A celebration of life will be held at
Canton Funeral Home May 9, 2026. Visitation will be held at 10: AM; funeral at 11:00 AM.
John is preceded in death by his parents, John Harold White and Margaret White, and brother,
Stanley White. John is survived by two sons, John Harold White, III, Jeffrey Slaton White, two
grandchildren, Samuel White and Abigail White, and one brother, Paul White.
Born in Grady Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia, on February 9, 1945. John lived in West End, East
Point, Barnesville, Cartersville, and Americus as a child. He graduated from Americus High
School in 1963 where he played basketball on a state champion team.
In 1963 Georgia Tech sent him to play basketball at Lon Morris Junior College in Jacksonville,
Texas. He graduated in 1965. In the fall of 1965 he entered Georgia Tech and graduated in
1968. Sherry Slaton and John were married on March 20, 1966.
Upon graduation he began a 25 year career with DuPont working at Orange, Texas,
Fayetteville, NC, Parkersburg, WVA, Newtown, CT, Jonesboro, AR,, Wilmington, DE, and
ultimately returning to the Atlanta area. After DuPont, John worked for bio-medical companies
in Buffalo, NY and in Eugene, Oregon.
John described himself as a dreamer and adventurer. His life-long sport was golf. Twelve
years ago, he moved to the retirement community, Soleil, in Canton, Georgia. Meeting and
enjoying new friendships, playing golf, gardening, and singing became his joy. John was a
member of Rising Hills Baptist Church. John’s outgoing personality , laugh, and songs will be
missed by many.
