Together, they built a life founded on deep affection and loyalty

Dorothy Lee Burnett, departed this life peacefully at her residence on June 21, 2026, at the remarkable age of ninety-seven. Born on February 16, 1929, in the close-knit community of Crabapple, Georgia, Dorothy spent nearly a century touching the lives of those around her, leaving a legacy of gentle strength and enduring love.

Dorothy was the cherished daughter of Johnston Lee Bates, Sr. and Cleo Tibbits Bates, whose memory she honored throughout her life. She grew up surrounded by the love of her siblings—Johnson Lee Bates Jr, Claude Bates, Billy Lee Bates, Joan Wanzer, and Hazel Brown—all of whom have also preceded her in passing. The bonds they shared shaped Dorothy’s early years and instilled in her the values of faith, perseverance, and kindness that would become hallmarks of her character.

Later in life, Dorothy met and married her devoted husband, John Wesley Burnett, Sr. Together, they built a life founded on deep affection and loyalty, supporting each other through seasons of joy and challenge. John Wesley, too, has gone before her, but the love they shared endures in the memories of those who knew them both.

Dorothy’s story is woven through generations and communities, marked by quiet acts of care and countless moments of kindness to neighbors and friends. Those who knew Dorothy recall a woman of singular warmth and grace—someone whose guidance was gentle but steadfast, whose faith was enduring, and whose appreciation of life’s simple pleasures created a haven for all who entered her home.

She is survived by a whole mess of family members, Dorothy’s legacy lives on in the lives she touched—in the laughter shared at Sunday dinners, the solace offered in times of need, and the gentle wisdom imparted to all who sought her counsel.

As we say goodbye, family, friends, and all whose lives Dorothy graced are invited to join in remembrance and celebration of her life. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, June 25, 2026, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Canton Funeral Home and Cemetery at Macedonia Memorial Park, 10655 E Cherokee Drive, Canton, GA. Immediately following, a graveside service will be held from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the same location.
