David Martin Tiedt, 88, of Woodstock, Georgia passed away Wednesday night in his home, surrounded by his family.
Dave was a proud member of a military family. His father, Chaplain (Lt. Col) Elmer Tiedt was stationed in Iowa and the Philippines before moving to Pearl Harbor. Much of his personality and work ethic was shaped from the experience of surviving the bombing of Hickam Field as a child. After growing up in Delray Beach Florida, Dave joined the Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division.
After retiring as a Sergeant First Class, Dave married his lovely wife Marcia Anne McGurn in 1956, and together they raised three sons and a daughter. He was a model patriarch to his family and a great example of hard work and loyalty.
Dave enjoyed coaching his three sons in baseball and watching his daughter play softball for his alma mater, Florida State University, where he also played collegiate tennis. He carried his love of tennis into a lifelong hobby as a member of many ALTA teams and leagues. He enjoyed his last title as a member of the "Super Seniors" in his late 70s. Marcia was always courtside cheering him on as his biggest fan!
Dave worked over 30 years at Southern Bell/BellSouth and enjoyed a long retirement playing tennis, traveling, reading, and fiddling in his yard.
Known as “Bampie” to his 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, he particularly enjoyed their visits and watching them grow up. He will be sorely missed by his family, who is grateful for the many great years they shared with him.
The family would like to thank Lotus Blossom Hospice for their wonderful care of their beloved Bampie during his final days.
Dave was preceded in death by his father (Elmer), mother (Jeannette) and sisters (Carol, Connie and Tommy). He is survived by his wife (Marcia), sons (Scott, Andy and Dan) and daughter (Laurie).
He will be proudly laid to rest at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please donate to the Winship Cancer Center.
